Meet Sensible Team Member: Joey Chavez

Every Sensible team member has something of value to bring to the work we do and to contribute to the industry as a whole. We are an HVAC company founded on the belief that all Coloradans should have accessible and affordable ways to add geothermal, solar, and heat pumps to their homes, and it is a value we work towards every single day.

Joey Chavez is the Operations Manager for Sensible Heating & Cooling, and he shared with us how he approaches his day-to-day work and his enthusiasm for the HVAC industry.

How long have you been working in the HVAC industry?

I’ve been working in the HVAC industry for 22 years. I got into this industry early on when a friend of mine was working on a new HVAC system, and I wanted to learn more. I’ve been working in this industry ever since and have worked primarily on the installation portion over the years. My current role with Sensible has me setting up those installations, helping with service questions, and working closely with Phil and Jo Jensen, two of Sensible’s owners

What drew you to this line of work?

I always saw this type of work as artwork. Working on installations is all about making something look good, as well as making sure it’s functional. Something as specific as ductwork feels like an art project to me.

Did you have any specific education or training?

I’ve mostly learned on the job and from other guys in this field. I’ve read every manual there is, and there are also great classes you can take through supply houses. Plus, Phil Jensen keeps everyone up-to-speed and trained with different classes. He also checks in and sees what the team is interested in learning more about.

What is your favorite part about working in this industry?

I like it all! But if I had to pick something, I like the more complicated jobs—geothermal systems and diverse water piping—they are the types of jobs that help you learn and grow.

How do you like being a part of the Sensible team?

It’s great to be a part of a company with a good work-life balance. The team doesn’t have to work on weekends or work late nights so that we can be home with our families. That’s especially important for younger families. The team is also great to work with—everyone’s willing to work hard, offer up ideas, have conversations, and learn from each other. Sensible’s all about working together as a team, and it’s a welcoming environment to be a part of.

What excites you about the green energy movement?

It’s about helping the environment now for future families. We’re doing this for our kids, and we’re also taking a burden off of the world. What attracted me to Sensible was the focus on geothermal energy. Coming from a more commercial background, this is something I wanted to learn about. I saw the difference they were making, and it sparked my interest.

What would you tell someone looking to join the Sensible team?

Don’t be afraid to try something new. You don’t grow unless you’re willing to try.

What do you enjoy doing during your time off?

I like spending time with my family, my wife, and my kids. It’s important to me to be present with them. And I love anything that has to do with sports.
