Winter Safety Tips for Your Heating System

Now that winter is here and your heating system is running on a consistent basis, there are a few safety tips to keep in mind, and a few things you can check on your own system to prevent any issues from arising this winter.

· Carbon Monoxide: Make sure you have a CO detector in the bedrooms of your home. CO detectors can help prevent issues with CO poisoning, a very serious condition that can result from an old furnace running. The best CO detectors can be purchased from heating contractors rather than places like Home Depot or Lowe’s. If you already have CO detectors in your home, make sure all of the batteries are fresh and that the detectors are working properly.

· Furnace Flue: Check your furnace flue after a big snowstorm to make sure it is clear. If too much snow or water gets into the flue, it can cause a lot of damage to your furnace.

· Condensate Drain: Make sure the condensate drain in your basements is clear, and that condensate is not backing up. If the drain is clogged or not running properly, it can back up and cause flooding issues in your basement or crawl space.

· Furnace Filters: Make sure your furnace filter has been changed for the winter. Dirty filters can be a fire hazard, and also increase your energy bills because your furnace has to run more often to keep up with the demand.
