Running Your A/C in 100 Degree Weather

Although it is rare for us to see weather over 100 degrees in Denver, this summer has proved that it does happen. A lot of our clients are concerned about their A/C in weather like this, and want to know if they are running it too much, or if it is getting overworked. Here are a few things you can do to make sure not to overstress your A/C in weather like this.

· The first and best way to make sure your A/C doesn’t get overstressed is to perform an annual maintenance on it each spring. A technician can make sure the unit is clean, running at optimal levels and also fully charged, and this can help avoid emergencies when the temperature is routinely in the 90s and running more often.

· It is also important to continue to change your filters throughout the summer months. A lot of people don’t realize that their A/C runs through the furnace, meaning the filter is still getting dirty during the summer. Make sure to continue to routinely change your filter to keep it clean.

· When the weather is climbing up into the triple digits, remember that your A/C is doing its job if the indoor temp is 20-25 degrees below the outside temperature. If it is 101 outside and 81 degrees in your home, your A/C is working well, even if it feels slightly hotter in your home than you would like it to be. Cranking up the A/C so it is running to keep it cooler than that can be stressful on the system and cause problems.
