Is your air conditioner cramping your outdoor lifestyle? Sometimes an air conditioner is too close to your outdoor dining area, or perhaps you want to put in new landscaping, fencing, or a deck that doesn’t work with the current position of your AC unit. If you truly need to move an air conditioner, it can certainly be done. But unfortunately it is usually a little more cost and labor intensive than most homeowners assume.
Steps to Move an Air Conditioner
Moving an air conditioner requires more than just extending a line a few feet. Depending on the position of your unit and where you want to move it, the following steps may be required.
- Refrigerant removed.
- Refrigerant lines removed and refabricated to new specifications
- A new pad installed and leveled
- New wiring installed
- Unit moved.
- Refrigerant replaced and recharged
- Unit tested
- Protective cover placed on line set
- System restarted
You may need new permitting for the move, and you should also keep in mind that there are certain restrictions on where an air conditioner can be placed (if you want to move an air conditioner to a sloped area, for instance, you will need to build an elevated platform to accommodate it). You also need to consider how close the unit will be to your property line, to avoid irritating your neighbors.
If you absolutely must move an air conditioner, hiring a professional is a necessity. There is a lot of risk involved with handling refrigerant and dealing with rewiring electrical lines, etc., so this is not a good DIY project!
