Alternative Energy Options for Home-Heating

At Sensible Heating & Cooling, we’re fond of electric heat, and it’s for good reason, too. Because systems and equipment associated with providing electric heat convert all incoming energy into warmth, they are 100 percent energy-efficient. This compared to heat coming from combustible appliances fueled by natural gas and propane, which only convert an estimated 30 percent of the fuel’s energy into electricity. Another plus to electric heat? Minimal maintenance.

In this edition of the blog, we’re highlighting two noteworthy sources of electric heat. If, after reading about air-source heat pumps and tankless water heaters, your interest is peaked and you want to know more about electric heat systems as alternative energy options, we invite you to reach out to Sensible Heating & Cooling.

Air-Source Heat Pumps

Far less complex then the name implies, air-source heat pumps (ASHP) make for extremely efficient and cost-effective heating and cooling solutions for homes of all sizes. By leveraging an A/C unit, ASHPs convert cool outside air into warm inside temperatures in winter, and reverses the cycle in summer. Under the right conditions, they can deliver up to three times more heat energy than electrical energy consumed by the system. For homes outfitted with solar panels, the systems can work in tandem to heat and cool a home, ultimately making ASHPs an inexpensive system to operate. Sensible is one of few HVAC companies with the experience necessary to install heat pumps for residential solar.

Tankless Water Heaters

In a world of instant gratification, tankless water heaters are gaining in popularity. They’re a notable compliment for homes using natural gas to heat water, and perfect for users who don’t routinely call upon hot water for more than one use at a time. Just as the name implies, a tankless water heater doesn’t retain any water. Instead, when hot water is cued from within a residence, cold water travels to the unit from the potable water supply and is heated by either a gas burner or electric coils. Most tankless water heaters reach their peak temperature and begin heating the water within seconds of the tap being activated. More expensive than the traditional version, energy-savings of tankless water heaters are worth the initial investment.
