No one in the market for a new furnace is looking for a LESS efficient furnace, right? Both for the sake of the environment and for your wallet, you are probably thinking about buying a more energy-efficient furnace. But don’t worry–an energy-efficient furnace doesn’t mean sacrificing ease and warmth.
If your furnace was installed before 1992, it is definitely time to make the switch. Standards from 1992 to 2013 regulated that a furnace must convert at least 78% of fuel into heat, and beginning in 2013, that number rose to 80%. This number represents the AFUE, or efficiency rating, of the furnace. The higher the AFUE percentage, the less you will spend on energy bills because less energy is escaping. If your furnace was installed more recently, it is probably what is considered a “mid-efficiency” furnace, with an AFUE of 80-83%.
With the new regulations and advances in technology, it is now possible to buy a new furnace with an AFUE rating of 90-98.5%. These are considered “high efficiency.” So whether your furnace is truly on its last legs or you are just ready to make the switch to a quieter and more efficient model, here’s what you should be considering when shopping for a new furnace.
High Efficiency New Furnace Features
- No pilot light (electronic ignition): An energy-efficient new furnace doesn’t burn gas while lying dormant
- Condensing gas feature: These furnaces run exhaust gas through a second heat exchange to minimize energy loss
- Long-term, comprehensive warranty: Warranties vary by manufacturer, but you want to find a comprehensive warranty that covers any corrosion from the condenser, along with more traditional issues
- Thermostat interaction: Some new furnaces can interact intelligently with the thermostat to make adjustments and minimize wasted energy
Even though the initial cost of a new furnace might be high, your savings over the long term can be significant. To further sweeten the deal, Xcel Energy offers rebates to customers in Colorado who purchase a high-efficiency new furnace.
