As summer approaches and our clients begin to switch on their air conditioners, many of them ask us about the approximate length of their air conditioner’s life. While it is similar to the life of a furnace in length (15-20 years), there are other factors that come into play.
For example, since your A/C unit sits outside and must endure the elements year-round, it is important to keep the unit clean and free of debris such as weeds, cottonwood and anything else that finds its way on the unit during the long winter. If your unit is too dirty, or the condensing coil gets clogged, it can cause your A/C to lock out, and potentially even burn out.
Another reason that your A/C could lock out or begin to have trouble is a dirty furnace filter. A lot of homeowners don’t realize that their A/C unit actually runs off of the furnace, requiring that the filter remain clean year-round. Not changing your furnace filter can damage both the furnace and the A/C, so keeping the filter clean all year is very important.
If you are concerned about your A/C, the best way to keep it running efficiently is to do a yearly maintenance each spring. Sensible Heating & Cooling recommends a maintenance on the A/C in the spring, and one in the fall to keep your system running at top efficiency, saving you money on your energy bills, and also prolonging the life of your system.
