Keep Your Heating System Healthy & Safe

Around this time of year, we get a lot of clients calling because they are experiencing issues with their heating system since the furnace hasn’t been running in six months or so. Here are a few tips to keep your system and your family healthy and safe this winter.

· Have a Maintenance Performed: It is important to have your furnace maintained each fall to check for any issues. This will save you a lot of headaches, especially if you find yourself without heat on Thanksgiving Day or when it is 5 degrees outside.

· Change Your Filters: This will be part of a maintenance, but it is also important to change your filters on a quarterly basis, even during the summertime since your cooling system runs through the furnace too. This will help your furnace last longer as well, because it will run more efficiently.

· Run Your Ceiling Fan: Simply reversing the direction of your ceiling fan in the winter months will help draw warm air up, and heat your home more evenly. The improved air circulation of the warm air will also save you money, because your furnace will run less often.

· Make Sure Your Ductwork is Sealed: Simply sealing the ducts will also save you money, as it will allow less warm air to escape.

· Be Safe: Make sure the area around your furnace is clear, and it is also a good idea to have a carbon monoxide detector in the home, especially if you have pets, small children or elderly family members. CO can be very dangerous, and a detector will help avoid issues.
