Freon. It’s a bit of a necessity when it comes to air conditioners. As a refrigerant or coolant, its what produces cool air. So, with the Federal Government set to outlaw the R-22 Freon variety in 2020 due to its harmful environmental agents, how will air conditioners remain relevant? Will you need to purchase a new air conditioner? We’ve answered these questions and more below.
How do I know if my AC requires the use of R-22? A nameplate on the unit will call out the type of refrigerant it contains, plus other information, including safety certifications and electrical ratings. If a nameplate is not provided, the owner’s manual may tell you or if you know the manufacturer and model number, you can call the manufacturer or check online for more information.
Should I consider replacing my system AC unit now if it calls for R-22? At Sensible Heating & Cooling, we recommend homeowners replace any dated systems now to take advantage of rebates and tax credits currently available through Xcel Energy. What is the refrigerant/coolant used in newer air conditioning units? When you purchase one of the newest air conditioners available on the market, it will most likely contain R-410A, a more environmentally-friendly refrigerant, or a legal alternative. Some manufacturers have produced “dry charge” ACs designed for use with R-22 refrigerant but empty until time of installation, when an HVAC professional fills the unit with the safer R-410A, or another legal alternative.
What do I do if I want to replace my AC unit? At Sensible Heating & Cooling, we first suggest scheduling an AC tune-up to determine the remaining lifespan of your unit. Now through Tuesday, May 15, we’ll complete the tune-up for $99. If the tune-up concludes you do indeed need a new system, we’ll ensure the necessary paperwork is completed and submitted, so you receive the maximum rebates available from Xcel Energy.
