Hot Water Heat vs. Forced Air Heat

Many people moving into a new home with hot water heat, or a boiler, are not as familiar with how a hot water system works. There are many differences between how the two work, particularly when the weather is very cold. Here are a few things to keep in mind about a boiler:

· Hot Water Heats Up More Slowly: One thing that is an adjustment for people is the fact that a boiler will take much longer to heat up the home than a traditional forced air system, especially during a cold snap. Turning up your thermostat when you get home from work at night will not work as well as it would with a forced air system.

· Hot Water Heat is More Even: One of the benefits of hot water heat is that your home will be more evenly heated. Unlike a forced air system, a boiler is already zoned, meaning that your upstairs will be as comfortable as your downstairs.

· Hot Water Heat Systems Often Have a Longer Life than Forced Air Systems: It is important to maintain a hot water system regularly, however, they often have much longer lives than a furnace. You can expect a forced air furnace to last between 15-20 years, while a boiler can last up to 30 years if it is maintained well.
