As Colorado experiences one of the hottest summers on record, are you struggling to keep your energy bills reasonable? There are a few simple tips you can do around your home to help decrease the amount your A/C has to run, and therefore lower your energy bills.
· Eliminating the glare of the sun on the south and east sides of your home can decrease the heat inside your home too. Consider planting trees and shrubbery that will provide additional shade as they grow and mature. This will help keep these parts of your home shadier and cooler.
· Make sure every window in your home has blinds or shades. Keeping them closed during the hottest parts of the day can help keep your home cooler, and allow your A/C a break. Also, remember to let the cooler night air do its work! Open those windows if there is a cooler evening to let nature help your home out too.
· Make sure your exterior doors are tight-fitting and weather-stripped. Cooler air sinks and flows along the floor, and will sneak right out if allowed to.
· Replace all of your old-style, incandescent light bulbs with fluorescent light bulbs. The old light bulbs actually generate a great deal of heat, and each light you turn on with these bulbs will actually raise the temperature of your home. Fluorescent bulbs also use a fraction of the electricity, so your energy costs will be lowered just by changing out the bulbs.
· Finally, consider adding ceiling fans to your home. Although running a ceiling fan only uses about as much energy as a 60-watt light bulb, running it can make any room feel cooler just by circulating the air that has already been cooled by the A/C.
