Though the term “heat pump” would seem to imply that they are used only to heat your home, using heat pumps for cooling is actually a great, energy-efficient option. Ground-source heat pumps use the earth’s natural heating and cooling to keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. So if you’re thinking about replacing an old air conditioner and furnace, you can kill two birds with one stone by installing a heat pump instead. 
Using heat pumps for cooling has several advantages over a standard air conditioning system. First, as mentioned above, heat pumps are more energy efficient (especially those with an ENERGY STAR rating–see here for qualified pumps). When gas prices are high, heat pumps can also significantly decrease your heating and cooling bills. Further sweetening the deal, using heat pumps for cooling means bigger Xcel rebates and larger tax breaks than if you install a normal air conditioner.
