How Long Will My Furnace Last?

A frequent question we get from customers is, “How long will my furnace last?” The standard answer is somewhere between 15 and 20 years. But there are steps you can take to ensure your furnace’s longevity. (If you’re already living in Colorado–congrats! Furnaces do tend to last longer in our dry climate.)

  • Stick to my annual maintenance routine? You can expect to extend the life of your furnace by a few years by doing regular annual maintenance. Think of it like an oil change for your car–the furnace will run more efficiently, and you’ll get a heads up on any potential problems before they turn into an emergency.
  • Throw in a duct cleaning at least every few years? Cleaning your ducts regularly will prevent the build-up of dirt, dust, and pet hair. These things can make your furnace sluggish and can cause damage in the long run. (As a bonus, duct cleaning can help reduce winter germs from spreading too!)
  • Reduce clutter around my furnace? This will help buy you some time as well. Not only can clutter around your furnace be unsafe, it also causes the furnace to work harder.
  • Install a programmable thermostat? Programmable thermostats are great. By scheduling when you want your heat on or off–on different days or different times of day–you not only save energy (and therefore money) but you also reduce wear and tear on your furnace.

If you follow these tips, your furnace will hopefully last at least 15 years, and possibly closer to 20. If you have more questions about how long your furnace will last or would like to schedule an annual maintenance call, please contact Dan at 720.876.7166 or [email protected] today.
