Geothermal Retrofit: Is Your Home a Good Candidate?

Though installing a geothermal system in an existing home can be more difficult than in a new build, it is certainly possible! A geothermal retrofit is just as simple as installing an HVAC system if you are doing a total gut remodel of your home. But if you just want the geothermal retrofit and aren’t planning on any significant remodeling, it’s important to determine what kind of existing heating system you have. Most homes have one of the following setups:

  1. Forced air heating with ductwork. If you currently have a forced air system with a gas, oil, or electric furnace, you will likely need to upgrade your ductwork in order to install a geothermal system (Though occasionally older homes have bigger ductwork that can work with geothermal systems).
  2. Hot water (hydronic) heating with baseboards, radiators, or radiant floors. If you currently have a hydronic heating system, doing a geothermal retrofit is much simpler.

We have done quite a few geothermal retrofits that have been extremely successful–so if your home doesn’t require a major overhaul, we highly recommend making the switch. Also remember that geothermal systems are also eligible for rebates from Xcel and tax credits through the end of 2016!

Depending on the cost of upgrading ductwork, etc., you can potentially see an immediate savings when switching to geothermal.
