Why Do Furnaces Emit Carbon Monoxide?

Last week we posted some useful information about the very real dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning. We received some great questions from some of our clients about why a furnace would emit carbon monoxide into the home. While there are many reasons that this can happen, here is a quick list of things that we usually share with our customers.

  • Furnaces that have cracks in the heat exchanger can be very dangerous. We are always very thorough when we do our furnace tune ups to make sure that the heat exchanger is in good working order and it doesn’t have any cracks. (Our team uses a camera to make sure that we can see the entire heat exchanger.)
  • Sometimes furnaces can emit carbon monoxide into the home because they were not installed properly. It is important to make sure that if you have a new furnace installed that all the necessary safety precautions are taken. A city permit needs to be pulled and inspections need to be completed before it is safe to use the new unit.
  • Furnaces need to be properly maintained. All furnaces should receive an annual tune up to make sure that there are no issues. Tackling repairs promptly and changing filters frequently are both important steps that all homeowners should take.
