When we tell people that you need to change your furnace filter in the summer, we are often met with blank stares. Why would they need to do furnace maintenance when they aren’t using their furnace? But what many people don’t realize is that your air conditioner actually runs off of your furnace–the two systems are interconnected. So changing your furnace filter in the summer is actually very important.
How Often to Change Your Furnace Filter in the Summer
A good rule of thumb is to check your furnace filter every month, particularly in the coldest parts of winter and hottest parts of summer. Whether or not you need to change the filter every month or whether you can go two or three months between changes depends on several variables:
- What type of air filter are you using? Some can go longer between changes.
- Do you have pets in the home?
- Are people in your household having issues with allergies and frequent colds?
- Do you live in an area with a lot of construction and/or pollution?
Why Is It Important to Change Your Furnace Filter in the Summer?
So whether you find you need to change your furnace filter every month or every three months, doing so is essential to the health of your HVAC system. Here are some of the benefits that come from changing your filter in the summer:
- Extends the life of your HVAC system
- Keeps energy costs down
- Maintains healthy air quality
- Keeps your house cooler because you are achieving optimum air flow
Though changing your filter doesn’t replace regular HVAC maintenance (which we recommend you do each year for both your furnace and air conditioner), it will certainly help your air conditioner function better all summer and reduce your risk of system breakdowns.
