If you’re anything like the average homeowner, “recharging an air conditioner” has you searching Google for a basic understanding of the terminology. What your research might reveal is “recharging” means to add more or refill refrigerant – the agent responsible for producing cool air within an air conditioner.
What the basic Google search might not tell you is the recharge is the result of a leak. Most HVAC companies will simply refill the AC system and call it a day. At Sensible Heating & Cooling, we believe in doing a thorough analysis of your system to determine why the recharge is necessary. More often then not the analysis will reveal a leak.
A Freon leak is bad for the environment. At Sensible, we closely follow the guidelines set in place by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). These guidelines allow for a single AC recharge of up to 30-days from the date of discovery to keep the unit running until the leak is repaired or to develop a plan to retrofit or retire the unit and complete actions under this plan within one year. If retrofitting the unit, a copy of the plan must be kept on site and be made available to the EPA upon request.
If it’s an R-22 leak, Sensible suggests inspection and immediate repair of the unit to prevent future costly recharges of R-22. Cost per pound for the refrigerant will only continue to skyrocket until it is no longer available. If the inspection warrants the unit is beyond repair, repairs are far too costly, or the systems is simply out of date, Sensible recommends replacing it entirely.
Newer AC units call for R-410A or another legal alternative refrigerant that’s eco-friendly, more energy-efficient and less expensive to refill. The purchase of a new AC unit allows homeowners to take advantage of rebates and tax credits currently available through Xcel Energy (review Xcel Energy’s Programs & Rebates for more information). As a Preferred Xcel Vendor, Sensible can help you navigate money-savings opportunities and make cooling systems more affordable.
We’re currently waiving our standard $89 diagnostic fee, as well as providing free estimates for new equipment and systems replacement. Plus, with the purchase of an air conditioner, furnace or full HVAC system, customers will receive one year free of added protection and maintenance with our Annual Service Agreements.
