Installing a Programmable Thermostat

You may have heard that installing a programmable thermostat in your home can help save on your energy bills. Although it can seem costly to install a programmable thermostat, it is true that it will save you over the long run. Here are a few of the questions we often hear:

· How does a programmable thermostat really save me money? The old thermostats work by keeping your home at a constant temperature. Despite what many people think, this will not save you money. By programming your new thermostat to go 5-10 degrees lower at night or during the day when no one is home, you can see a 20% savings on your energy bills throughout the year.

· Is programming the thermostat simple? Truthfully, programming your thermostat can be somewhat confusing, although following the instruction book to get the right program into your new thermostat is key to seeing optimal savings. If you are confused or need help, your HVAC contractor can normally help you when performing your annual maintenance.

· Will I see savings year-round if I have a cooling system? Yes. Regulating your home’s temperature during the winter and summer will save you all year round. Also, remember to turn your systems completely off during the moderate spring and fall months of the year to see even more savings.
