HVAC Zoning for Whole House Comfort

Do you struggle every summer with a boiling hot upstairs and an Arctic downstairs? Or have a certain room in your house that gets all the sun? HVAC zoning might be the answer! Zoning means splitting your home into sections that can be heated or cooled independently. This adds comfort as well as helps reduce energy costs, since you aren’t compensating for a too-hot or too-cold room by blasting your HVAC system in the rest of the house.

Creating HVAC Zoning

In order to create zones in your home, you will need more than one thermostat – one for each zone – and you will also need to have vents installed inside of your duct system. All of the thermostats and vents are then connected to a central control panel. The control panel reads where and when to open and close the vents according to the hotter or colder areas of the house. Having zones affects both heating and cooling in a home, so the benefits can be enjoyed year-round.

Approaches to zoning range from the very simple to the very high-tech, so we recommend hiring a professional to evaluate your zone options. It is important to note that some houses are not able to have zoning systems installed due to restricted access to ductwork.

New AC systems are particularly suited to HVAC zoning, and there are currently many rebates available that make this a more affordable option (and we’ve been hearing that Xcel rebates are currently being processed very quickly. So get yours in before they get slammed with requests!). If you’re interested in adding a new AC as part of your HVAC zoning plans, we also offer 6-month, zero-interest financing to make it easier on your wallet.
