What Should I Consider if I Want to Retrofit My System with Geothermal?

In early 2013, we are already seeing a lot more interest from clients in retrofitting their homes with geothermal heat pumps rather than a traditional HVAC system. With the extension of the tax credit through the end of the year, it makes a lot of sense to consider geothermal, both because of the overall savings and the reduced carbon footprint. So what should you consider before deciding between the two systems?

· Will The Underground Loop Affect My Landscaping? The answer to this is yes, but not in the long-term. A retrofit will require that part of your yard be dug up, but the loops only need trenches about 6 inches wide. Most of the time, you will see very little damage to your lawn, and once the project is complete, there is no long-term effect on your grass, trees or other plants.

· What Should You Do to Get Your House Ready for Geothermal? To maximize your savings and energy efficiency, it is a good plan to have your home ready with adequate insulation, as well as energy efficient windows and doors. Sealing up any leaks you may have is also beneficial, as is having an energy audit done. If your home is as energy efficient as possible, the geothermal pump can be more properly sized and run as well as possible.
